This was not their intended way to celebrate his victory but her attempt to take photograph of her spouse as he won a race landed her in the hospital.
There was a dramatic end to one of the stages of the Vuelta a Colombia cycling competition when the race winner collided with his wife after crossing the finish line. The impact of the crash on her required several stitches.
After a frantic sprint to the finish line, Luis Carlos Chia pipped Oscar Quiroz to first place on the soaked streets of Monteria, northern Colombia.
Chia’s joy was short-lived as he collided with his partner, Claudia Roncancio, who was attempting to photograph her delighted spouse.
He celebrated his victory in the third stage of the Vuelta a Colombia by waving his fists in the air and pounding his chest, but he was caught off guard by his partner and was unable to swerve out of her way.
Chia was writhing in pain on the floor as the two collided at nearly full speed, while Roca was face down, seemingly unconscious.

El Tiempo, a local news agency, gave a reassuring update on Roncancio, adding, ‘She is conscious.’ The doctors stitched her up and will keep her under observation for the next few hours.’
‘I don’t really know what happened in this moment, I was over the finish line,’ the cyclist, who was wearing the yellow shirt as overall leader after winning the opening stage, said.
‘I attempted to brake, but the bike was unresponsive.’ They’re checking her now, thank goodness she didn’t lose consciousness. It was more than just a scare.’
Roncancio was brought to the hospital before being released on Monday. She is a cyclist-turned-photographer who now travels with her husband and documents his riding achievements.
